On July 2, 2025, Democratic Front (DF) President Mathias Mpuuga addressed a press conference at the party’s headquarters in Namirembe, flanked by key party leaders, including Juliet Kakande, the women’s league leader, and Michael Mabikke, the party’s Secretary General.

This maiden address to the press marked a significant milestone in the party’s journey, following its successful delegates’ conference on June 26, 2025, and official launch in Masaka.

Mpuuga began by expressing gratitude to the media for clarifying the party’s mission and vision, dispelling doubts and misinformation that had been circulating about the DF.

“If anybody thought that the DF is a footnote in Uganda’s politics, so now they have to go back and edit their prejudicial presumptions about the DF,” he said.

The DF President also addressed the issue of unfilled positions on the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC), assuring that these positions would be filled after adequate consultations with relevant stakeholders.

“Any position will be filled as a consequence of a consensus after consultations,” Mpuuga emphasized.

Membership Recruitment Drive and Categories

Mpuuga announced the launch of a membership recruitment drive, with different categories of membership, including:

Ordinary Member: Shs 2,000 annually

Bronze Member: Shs 5,000 monthly

Silver Member: Shs 10,000 monthly

Golden Member: Shs 50,000 monthly

Platinum Member: Shs 1 million and above annually

The DF President explained that these categories are designed to create levels of support for the party, rather than classes within the party.

“We are building a mass party supported by citizens,” Mpuuga said.

DF Rolling Branches

Mpuuga also introduced the concept of “rolling branches,” which would enable groups of 100 members from various professions or sectors to form a DF branch. This innovation aims to make it easier for citizens to participate in the party’s activities.

Nomination of Intending Candidates

The DF President invited the Secretary General or the Chairperson Electoral Commission to clarify the process and requirements for aspiring candidates, but was explicit on the fact the issue of their decision to make nomination fees payable to the party by aspirants was minimal to enable all and sundry to participate in the political affairs of their country.

Commitment to Work with Others

Mpuuga reiterated the DF’s commitment to working with all forces of change in the country, emphasizing the need for collaboration and cooperation, stating, “we are ready to work with whoever respects harmony for a better country,” he said.

Upcoming Events

The DF President announced the party’s first open-air national meeting in Kampala on July 18, 2025, and another meeting in Jinja on August 1, 2025. These events aim to engage citizens and promote the party’s agenda.
