On his recent fundraising tour to South Africa, Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine, the leader of the National Unity Platform (NUP), revealed a string of secrets about Uganda’s music industry and its connection to politics.
He spoke about how some top artists, including Manisul Ssemanda alias King Saha, were paid huge sums of money by the Government to record a praise song for President Yoweri Museveni’s 2016 election campaign code-named Tubonga Naawe (We are with You).
According to Bobi Wine, King Saha’s fortunes took off after this deal, and he even strategically married into one of the families of top Generals close to the regime.
Bobi Wine expressed admiration for King Saha’s calculated move, which has seemingly paid off.
“He [Saha] looked far when he chose to protect his fortunes through marrying from one of the families of the top Generals who made those connections they have in the regime,” Bobi Wine said.
It is being alleged that the woman cooking at Saha’s home, is a daughter to the top generals who happens to be a blood relative to President Museveni also the regime’s money bag.
What is more, King Saha has since joined Bobi Wine’s camp and is reportedly able to provide him with some level of protection before the General who is one of the main links between Bobi and the regime.
Regrets Challenging Museveni
When he appeared on a Podcast still in South Africa, Bobi Wine who did not divulge the Saha talk, turned his expression contemplative as he spoke about his decision to challenge President Museveni in the political arena.
“Honestly, I did not know what I was dealing with,” he admitted to the podcaster, “If I knew, I wouldn’t be in it. I had accidentally said, ‘I would challenge President Museveni,’ and there was no way I could take it back. Then it dipped me into the problem.”
Bobi then seemed to be reevaluating the risks and consequences of his choice, now questioning whether it was worth the trouble after revealing his connections with the regime he is up to challenge.
The NUP leader then paused, collecting his thoughts before continuing, “I have got to admit, I had been a star, I have had connections and friends within the regime that could have taken me far if I had not taken a different path…They reached out to me, and I rejected the offer. It was a huge offer of money I had never seen before, and I refused!”
Disappointed in Western Powers
Bobi Wine’s journey into politics was also marked by his initial huge expectations of support from Western powers to propel him to the presidency, but alas. He expressed his disappointment with the West, branding their behaviour as “political hypocrisy and someone has to call out that.”
Bobi thus said, “We no longer request that [help] from the governments, we request that from the citizens.”
