In a shocking revelation, Nakaseke South MP Paul Luttamaguzi, a member of the opposition National Unity Platform (NUP), disclosed that key figures in his party starting from party leader Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine, Secretary General Lewis Rubongoya, Leader of opposition (LoP) Joel Ssenyonyi, Treasurer Benjamin Katana, Secretary for Diaspora Affairs Fred Nyanzi Ssentamu also elder brother to Bobi, NUP deputy president in charge of Buganda Muhammad Muwanga Kivumbi, and himself, frequently communicate with President Yoweri Museveni.
This disclosure, made during a live television appearance on Thursday this week, has raised eyebrows within the political arena and among NUP supporters.
Luttamaguzi’s tone during the broadcast was noticeably subdued, a shift from his typical character, as he sought to clarify the nature of these conversations with the president whom he described as the “fountain of the honor.”
He however, explained that leaders’ routine communication with Museveni whom they are claiming to be working to remove from power, should not be misconstrued as a betrayal of the opposition’s values, asserting that discussions can be both necessary and insightful.
“Some of us, Museveni calls us many times not once, not twice, not thrice, not four, not five, but many times, and we speak about many things, and it should not be taken that whenever Museveni calls you means he bought you,” Luttamaguzi stated.
The MP’s remarks came in response to growing scrutiny of party members, particularly focusing on the revealing conduct of NUP Deputy President Muwanga Kivumbi’s dead night and secretive dealings with Museveni as revealed by Anita Among, the speaker of Parliament, recently.
Luttamaguzi thus pleaded with the Speaker Among to exercise discretion regarding the confidentiality of MPs’ dealings, stressing her position as a leader of all who should safeguard such sensitive information.
“The Speaker should learn to be secretive and keep the MPs’ secrets because she is our boss in Parliament,” he remarked.
During the ongoing presidential campaigns, Among who is playing a pivotal role in the Museveni’s reelection bid, made disclosures about dubious financial arrangements involving several NUP figures, including Kivumbi, Betty Nambooze, and Joel Ssenyonyi, the LoP, among others.
Despite their vocal opposition to Museveni, Luttamaguzi encouraged a broader understanding of these politicians’ interactions with the president, arguing that political maneuvering is not inherently wrong.
“Do you want to tell me that Speaker Among doesn’t call the LoP Joel Ssenyonyi? In politics, anybody including the president calls anybody,” he added.
Luttamaguzi defended his fellow party members by affirming what he called the vital contributions of politicians like Kivumbi, who has been influential in legislative matters such as the coffee bill, which Among said, Muwanga guided Museveni on how to handle.
He emphasized that such collaboration should not be viewed negatively stating, “Muwanga is very powerful, and that is how he guided the president on how to handle the coffee bill which was passed in 2025. So, stop those trivial talks because that is not a big deal,” he asserted.
The MP further stressed that conversations between opposition members and the president are simply part of political life in Uganda.
“It is not a taboo for an opposition MP to speak to president Museveni and for anybody to tell us about those things is trivial talk; leave us alone and serve our people,” Luttamaguzi passionately exclaimed.
The gravity of these claims has sparked intense debate among party supporters and political analysts alike, as they ponder the implications of such interactions on the NUP’s future and its public image.
