In a bid to recover from the mental stress caused by the financial and political losses he suffered late last year, Kyengera Town Council Mayor Mathias Walukagga, has reportedly secured Shs600M from Emmanuel Magoola, a candidate who has faced countless challenges in his pursuit of becoming the Busiro East MP.

This financial buy-off comes as Magoola continues to grapple with his political ambitions even after a series of flat failures in the previous electoral cycles.

Magoola, who had recently invested heavily in his bid to join the National Unity Platform (NUP), found himself struggling for recognition, particularly after he allegedly spent large sums to curry favor with influential members within the party.

He hoped that such investments would ease his path to obtaining the party’s flag for the forthcoming 2026 elections only to lose the flag to Walukagga whose academic qualifications are as light as aunt’s wings.

Walukagga was happy although until late December when the Electoral Commission denominated him over lack of the requisite academic credentials, shuttling all his political dreams. This left both men in a precarious situation as they navigated their political fortunes.

Just a day after Walukagga received the disqualification news, Magoola held a press conference, asserting that he had held discussions with NUP officials prior to handing the party flag to Walukagga that should he be disqualified, he would become the substitute, and that he was now the official party flag bearer.

However, party leaders, including the spokesperson Joel Ssenyonyi, swiftly dismissed Magoola’s claims, calling them “false and impersonation,” and encouraged supporters to disregard his announcements.

Despite the initial rejection, private negotiations between Walukagga and Magoola soon commenced. During discussions, Magoola appealed to Walukagga for support in his campaign, recognizing that he was in dire need of backing after losing hope in his political aspirations. An understandably frustrated Walukagga, who was immensely strained financially, and emotionally, initially turned down Magoola’s pleas for support.

In a desperate bid to fund his campaign efforts prior to obtaining the party card and after it, he sold off all his properties to raise funds, according to him and even relocated to a lodge in Lungujja in Lubaga Division because he had no other options.

However, Magoola was persistent, sending intermediaries to Walukagga, asserting that aligning with him could helpto enhance his chances of winning over constituents.

In his dire quest to recover the money he lost to party officials during his earlier application for a party flag, Walukagga recognized an opportunity to regain his footing.

Faced with mounting debts from lawyers in town who misled him into appealing the verdict by the Electoral Commission, and finding himself in a tight spot, Walukagga decided to request Shs800M from Magoola.

Magoola said Shs800M demand from Walukagga was much, but after some negotiations, they settled on an offer of Shs600M. In a deal laden with conditions such as a public declaration, Walukagga agreed to publicly endorse Magoola and join him on the campaign trail.

On January 6, 2026, the duo held a joint press conference where Walukagga proudly declared his commitment to support Magoola in the upcoming elections.
