In a vibrant display of political ambition ahead of the upcoming general elections, the Democratic Front (DF) Electoral Commission has welcomed the candidacies of over 40 aspiring leaders in the Teso sub-region of Eastern Uganda. These individuals, driven by a passion for change, have submitted their expression of interest forms, marking a pivotal moment in their pursuit of various leadership positions.

The nomination event held on August 8, 2025, underscored a renewed political enthusiasm within the region, revealing the diverse array of candidates eager to serve their communities through the transformative political party.

Among the notable aspirants, thirteen (13) candidates are competing for parliamentary positions across multiple constituencies.

Prominent figures include Ichoto Julius Jeje, who is contesting for the Kapir County MP seat, and Ebiau Peter Carlos, who aims to represent Kasilo County.

Moreover, Florence Lyogil is vying for the Woman MP seat in Serere district, while Christine Abeja seeks to claim the Woman MP position for Ngora district.

Adding to the dynamic, Pascal Amuriat, the DF Vice President for the Eastern region, is determined to secure a seat for Soroti City East in the upcoming 12th Parliament.

What adds a compelling twist to this nomination process is the strategic migration of at least four candidates from other political parties to join the DF.

Christine Abeja’s defection from the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) and Christopher Okwi’s switch from NRM in his bid to become the Ngora district chairman are particularly noteworthy.

Both candidates have articulated their frustrations with what they view as undemocratic practices within the NRM, prompting their leap to the DF party they believe embodies true democratic principles.

Another eye-catching transition is that of Ebiau Peter, who left the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) to contest for the Kasilo County parliamentary seat.

His decision reflects a profound alignment with the DF’s foundational values and its commitment to creating a more democratic Uganda, signifying a broader trend of politicians seeking platforms that resonate with their ideals of governance.

During the nominations, Michael Kakembo Mbwatekamwa, Ntebbe Municipality MP, and DF whip in Parliament, extended heartfelt commendations to the aspirants, particularly the defectors, for their bold decision to embrace the DF’s vision.

Representing party President Mathias Mpuuga, Kakembo underscored the commitment to fostering the growth of these hopeful leaders through tailored capacity-building programs focused on enhancing their political and leadership skills.

Henry Lubowa, chairperson of the DF’s Electoral Commission, proudly declared the nomination exercise in Teso sub-region a tremendous success.

He acknowledged the remarkable turnout and palpable enthusiasm among candidates and supporters alike, stressing a significant uptick in political engagement within the region. This response reflects a powerful desire among the electorate to actively participate in shaping their governance.

The DF’s chosen venue for the nomination, Shaan Gardens in Serere town council along Igola Road, served as a bustling hub where candidates of all levels gathered. The atmosphere was electric, with hopefuls accompanied by cheering supporters, creating an inspiring environment that celebrated democracy in action.

As the political terrain in the Teso sub-region evolves, the Democratic Front is emerging as a formidable force ahead of the general elections.

With a rich wall-hanging of candidates, including those who have navigated political boundaries, the DF is not just gearing up for a competitive electoral season; it is poised to redefine the political representation in the region.

As the elections approach, these candidates are tasked with mobilizing their bases and articulating compelling visions for the future, all while contributing to a reinvigorated democratic process in Uganda.
