DF Internal Nomination Exercise Kicks Off With Enthusiasm

The Democratic Front headquarters in Namirembe turned into a hub of activity on July 11, 2025, as the Party Electoral Commission began receiving expressions of interest forms from aspiring candidates.

Over 40 individuals, accompanied by a limited number of supporters and seconders, converged on the party offices, eager to kick-start their journey to becoming DF flag bearers in the 2026 elections.

Notable figures vying for parliamentary positions included Samuel Lubega Mukaaku, the DF National Chairman, who seeks to represent Lubaga South, Hakim Ssemuwemba Ndawula for Busiro South, Flavia Nakafeero, who aims to represent Wakiso district as Woman MP, among others.

At the local government level, young aspirants like Wanyana Hafiswa, eyeing a councillor position in Nansana Municipality, Elisha Luwalira eyeing Makindye division Mayorship, Muwanguzi Sharif seeking to become the Wakiso district chairperson, were among those who expressed interest in the DF party ticket.

According to Henry Lubowa, Secretary for Mobilization in charge of elections, aspiring candidates must bring proof of party membership, proof of payment of nomination fees, and other documentation.

The nomination fees vary by position, ranging from 500,000 shillings for presidential flag bearers to 10,000 shillings for sub-county councilors.

The exercise, which started in the mid-morning, is expected to run until August 15 for local government candidates and August 22 for MPs.

Henry emphasized that nominees will undergo vetting by party branches in their respective electoral areas, ensuring a thorough evaluation process.

The first day of the nomination exercise raised hopes, with dozens of aspirants turning up with enthusiasm, and the display of interest underscores the party’s potential for growth and its commitment to internal democracy.

As part of its internal democracy, the Democratic Front is keen on ensuring a smooth and transparent process.

Nannyunja Alice, a member of the electoral commission, emphasized the need for candidates to follow guidelines and adhere to set timelines.

The Democratic Front’s nomination exercise is another flagship activity for the young party’s preparations for the forthcoming general 2026 elections, and with a growing number of aspirants expressing interest, the party is poised to field strong contenders in various electoral positions.
