As the countdown begins for candidate nominations in the parliamentary race leading up to the 2026 general elections, the Democratic Front (DF) is reveling in a sizeable influx of new members.

Just hours ahead of the nominations set for October 22, 2025, the party, which has only recently entered Uganda’s political landscape, has gained several high-profile figures defecting from other political groups.

This surge in membership reflects the DF’s growing reputation as one of the fastest expanding political parties in Uganda, appealing to voters with its genuine commitment to effective governance and a distinctive ideological framework.

Among the prominent new members is Nakuya Aidah, the former councilor at Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) who is targeting the Kampala Central parliamentary seat.

She was joined by Wilfred Nakandi, aiming for the Nakawa East seat, and Nakyanja Annet Mawejje, who is positioning herself for the Women’s MP role for Wakiso District.

The decisions of these individuals to join the DF highlight the party’s compelling appeal and its capacity to shape Uganda’s political landscape.

The DF has also attracted Nakintu Joanita Lule, vying for the Mpigi District Women’s MP position, along with Aisha Waliggo, who aspires to win the Kalungu District Women’s MP seat. Additionally, David Musiri is eager to contest for the Makindye West constituency.

This influx of strong political personalities greatly enhances the DF’s campaign as it prepares for the forthcoming political contests.

Notably, except for Nakyanja, who has transitioned from the Democratic Party (DP), the rest of these leaders have defected from the National Unity Platform (NUP), presently Uganda’s largest political party.

They have voiced their frustrations with what they perceive as undemocratic practices within the NUP, prompting their shift toward the DF’s more inclusive and transparent leadership approach.

The newly joined members are not only formidable candidates but are also recognized as dedicated advocates against Uganda’s enduring one-man rule, striving for substantial change in the East African nation.

Their commitment to reform is exemplified in their choice to align with the DF, which they see as dedicated to addressing the pressing challenges faced by Ugandans today.

Party President Welcomes New Members

In welcoming these new figures into the fold, DF President Mathias Mpuuga expressed optimism about the party’s trajectory, stating, “As a young and growing party, we are open and excited to welcome new members who will enhance our mission of providing quality leadership.” This sentiment underscores the DF’s commitment to inclusivity and its focus on cultivating a diverse leadership team equipped to tackle pressing issues in Uganda.

With these dynamic candidates on board, the DF is poised to make a noteworthy impact in the upcoming elections, increasingly positioning itself to populate the legislature with members who are passionate about enacting policies that resonate with the hopes for change many Ugandans seek.
