The National Unity Platform (NUP) leader Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine, has announced plans to transform his foot soldiers’ outfit into a full-fledged militia, complete with arms, and combat training.

The declaration, made on the colourful occasion to celebrate his 43rd birthday, has sparked widespread debate with many questioning the implications of Bobi’s ‘reckless proclamations’

The leader, who was flanked by his wife Barbra Itungo aka Barbie, inspected a mocking guard of honor formed by the foot soldiers, who were singing military songs.

He then addressed them, expressing his gratitude for their loyalty and protection.

“I would like to thank the foot soldiers for giving me something [militia parade to inspect as a president] that makes me really happy. I like you all, and the major reason I like you is that you are my protection guards. You have kept me alive, you have made me proud for all you do, and most of all, you have liked me. Thank you very much,” Bobi said.

Bobi’s speech took a more serious tone as he revealed his plans for the near future.

“My brothers and sisters [foot soldiers], you know our mission, and we shall get there come what may, I can assure you this today. My wish is to remove Museveni as soon as possible, and I know we are going to achieve this because we have whatever it takes to take us to power,” he declared.

He further announced that the foot soldiers’ attire would undergo a transformation to reflect their new status as a real army force.

“I am proud of you that every passing day, you transform into what I want you to be. I can now see that you are a real army force. I am sure we are going to change everything regarding your attire to get serious combat, what will not change are the berets on your heads, and as you know, we are in arrangements to arm you for serious action that will take us to a new Uganda,” he revealed.

Ugandans React

The leader’s announcement has sparked widespread reaction, with many Ugandans expressing concern over the implications of his words.

“This is a real militia, soon they will be a real terrorist group like ADF, M23…,” Nanyanzi Gladys said, “they just need to be attacked with guns, I believe they even have guns.”

Others have questioned the leader’s motives, with Musinguzi Patrick asking, “Can you go get Solomon [Bobi’s son] from the USA and make him also a foot soldier like the way Gen Museveni made his son a military soldier? Then we shall know you are serious.”

Prince of Peace, another Ugandan, has cautioned the leader against putting his supporters in harm’s way.

“Stop putting people’s children in open danger. You can do better without using a military setting. People are fighting to get civilians out of military courts for you, you are pushing more to military acts.”

Kanyanyira has also weighed in, saying, “Give me five reasons why you wouldn’t be tried in a military court, stop provoking the army and the government by showing that you have your own army with military uniforms which concludes that you might also be armed. This is the 1st political party with a military parade.”
