In a commanding and direct address to his subjects, the Kabaka of Buganda, Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II, unequivocally warned his people to remain vigilant against cunning politicians who disguise their true intentions beneath a façade of friendship.

Speaking through a pre-recorded video broadcast from Kibuli Mosque, where hundreds gathered to celebrate the 32nd anniversary of his coronation on July 31, 2025, Kabaka made it clear that the upcoming election season is a critical period which may be exploited by opportunistic adversaries seeking to weaken the Kingdom’s foundational strength.

“The political season we are entering is one of the avenues enemies of Buganda often use to infiltrate the Kingdom. I urge you to remain alert and strong,” the Kabaka asserted with authority.

“Be cautious of such people”, Kabaka commanded his subjects. His words served as a clarion call to the citizens, reinforcing the importance of solidarity in the face of historical challenges posed by political charlatans intent on undermining the Kingdom for their personal ambitions.

Sheikh Yasiin Kiweewa, who led prayers at the Mosque, bolstered the King’s message with a profound statement on divine leadership. “We are all Ugandans, and the Kabaka is our royal leader, chosen by God. It is only Allah who appoints leaders, not man,” he declared emphatically, underscoring the notion that genuine leadership transcends mere political aspirations.

Not New

This reminder from the Kabaka is not a new revelation; instead, it solidifies warnings he delivered during last year’s anniversary.

In 2024, at Namirembe Cathedral, he similarly condemned ambitious politicians and clan chiefs intent on “desecrating” and belittling the monarchy.

His recent message serves, once again, as a resolute affirmation of the Kingdom’s unity against opportunistic forces undermining its integrity.

Speaks Directly To Bobi

The timing of Kabaka’s address is especially critical, following a period marked by unscrupulous politicians, particularly from the opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) leader’s unyielding efforts to prey upon many issues including the King’s health struggles to delegitimize Kingdom officials.

With Bobi’s backing, some clan chiefs who adamantly traveled to Namibia where the Kabaka had taken a sick leave, even audaciously positioned themselves as the rightful bearers of the King’s narrative, attempting to portray the appointed officials as “mere workers.” Such actions not only reveal their true intentions but are a blatant attack on the Kingdom’s esteem.

In his address on July 31, 2024, the tough-talking Kabaka made it abundantly clear that unity is essential in combating such treachery, stating,

“Thanks to God for the rains to see which hut leaks, and the one that does not leak,” Kabaka said, and indicated that the trials faced during those challenging times exposed true loyalties, casting aside doubts about the integrity of his subjects.

In tackling these political deceptions, the King asserted the vital cultural norms governing the monarchy, emphasizing that the path to the throne is dictated by established traditions, not popular whims.

“The cornerstone clan chiefs who perform the cultural norms on crowning the King are well-known and aware of their responsibilities,” he declared firmly, rejecting any claims seeking to undermine this sacred process as a direct threat to Buganda’s legacy.

Addressing the politically charged criticisms aimed at the Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga, Kabaka made it abundantly clear that he reigns with the assistance of a personally appointed Katikkiro.

This dismissal of any notion that his authority could be overshadowed reiterates his control and commitment to maintaining the Kingdom’s integrity.

2026 Elections

As elections loom, the Kabaka called upon his subjects to distance themselves from disruptive individuals wielding transient popularity as a weapon against the Kingdom’s leadership.

After Bobi and company used Buganda as a political stepping stone to further their political ambitions, he turned against the cultural institution which played a pivotal role in making him what he is.

Indeed, since the last election, the political landscape has been rife with calculated maneuvers from opponents, with the powerful Bobi Wine at the helm attempting to manipulate public sentiment and positioning to undermine Buganda.

He has often told his supporters how Buganda Kingdom is the stumbling block in his quest to emerging Uganda’s president and claimed that as other regions overwhelmingly support him, some officials in Buganda Kingdom are against him and that he was the generation’s Ben Kiwanuka whom he claimed Buganda betrayed back in days to lose the opportunity to become Uganda’s President, and instead, supported Milton Obote.

He thus wedged a serious battle against the Katikkiro Mayiga, whom he accused of working with the regime to fail his presidency bid with his supporters branding the Katikkiro “Museveni’s RDC in Mengo.”

When Kabaka fell sick, Bobi directed his supporters to question the King’s whereabouts, knowingly disregarding the Katikkiro’s regular updates about the King’s health to the extent that his supporters traveled to Namibia and staged protests demanding for Kabaka’s whereabouts.

Notably, Bobi, who demanded Kabaka’s public apperance, chose not to welcome the King back after a premature return from Namibia to Uganda, and shockingly, chose to skip the 31st coronation anniversary. Instead Bobi used the day to pay a courtesy visit on Omukuuka, the cultural leader of Bwamasaaba in the Eastern region, igniting eyebrows and doubts about his true intentions.

He took the manipulation to another level after directing his supporters to replace the norm of taking Kabaka’s portraits on the traditional introductions with his portraits. This direct attempt to desecrate the Kabaka and the Kingdom took place for some good time until when Buganda officials clapped back at it.

As the Sheikh reiterated the essence of respecting genuine authority, he firmly stated, “No one can become a King however powerful he might perceive himself to be. Leadership is not self-appointed.” This solid reminder reinforces the necessity of upholding historical legacies and the importance of recognizing legitimate authority.

As the echoes of the Kabaka’s unwavering call for unity and vigilance rang throughout Kibuli Mosque, citizens emerged with a reinforced commitment to safeguarding their Kingdom from deceitful ambitions.
