On July 13, 2025, Mathias Mpuuga, the Democratic Front President and Commissioner of Parliament issued a call to voters in Buganda to prioritize competence over convenience when electing their leaders.
Speaking at Luvule Parish in Nyendo-Mukungwe, Masaka City, during a Sunday service, Mpuuga cautioned against voting for leaders based on excitement and populist gestures.
Instead, the area MP urged voters to evaluate candidates based on the strength of their ideas and commitment to public service.
Mpuuga noted that Buganda has suffered from a lack of formidable elected leaders capable of voicing the concerns of the people due to the excitement surrounding elections.
He warned that if voters fail to exercise serious judgement while voting, Buganda is likely to be derailed by opportunism, stating, “Elections must be about competence, not convenience.”
The Commissioner urged voters to support candidates with genuine intentions for the development of Buganda and Uganda at large.
He stressed the importance of electing leaders who are committed to serving the people and advancing the interests of the region.
During the service, Mpuuga also contributed Shs6.2M to the construction of a modern church at Luvule Parish, which is seeking over 1.5 billion shillings for the project.
The parish priest, Reverend Father Joseph Kagoma, appealed to the faithful to combine their efforts to complete the project within the set timeframe.
In addition to his contribution to Luvule Parish, Mpuuga also donated Shs2M to Butale Sub-Parish Church in Kirowooza Parish, Masaka City.
The Sub-Parish is seeking Shs7M to cover the lease fees for the land where the church is situated.
Mpuuga’s call to voters to prioritize competence over convenience in elections is a timely reminder of the importance of electing leaders who are committed to serving the people.
By doing so, voters can ensure that their leaders are equipped to address the challenges facing the region and advance the interests of the people.
