Mpuuga Wins Ugandans’ “Civility” Praise after Condemning Police Brutality Against Bobi

In a surprising turn of events, a swift post on an official X account by the former Leader of Opposition (LoP) Mathias Mpuuga in which he condemned the police brutality and an “attack” against National Unity Platform (NUP) party president Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu alias Bobi Wine has garnered widespread praise from Ugandans on social media.

Mpuuga’s message, which described the police’s actions as “high-handed” and called for condemnation from all “right-thinking” Ugandans, has been widely hailed as a testament to his leadership and character.

“The Police brutal and high-handed attack on Bobi Wine is something every right-thinking Ugandan must condemn,” Mpuuga posted, “we pray for Mr Kyagulanyi’s quick recovery, and demand that the Police explain this high-handedness.”

This praise comes as a surprise, given the well-documented feud between the former LoP and Bobi Wine. Since December 2023, Bobi Wine has been leading an operation to character assassinate and politically destroy his former LoP and deputy president in charge of the central region. However, despite this, the former LoP has chosen to take the high road, exhibiting “civility and humility” in the face of adversity.

When Mpuuga was replaced as the LoP, he handled the transition with diplomacy and grace, ensuring a smooth handover to his successor, Joel Ssenyonyi whom he promised to fully “backup if you need any assistance in terms of guidance.”

However, in contrast, Mpuuga’s successor has done little, but publicly attack him at every opportunity, hiding behind the guise of fighting corruption, the party president Bobi said, Mpuuga was involved in while serving as a LoP even after, the Court cleared the service award.

As such, it would have been easy for Mpuuga to turn a blind eye when Bobi Wine was attacked by police, but instead, he chose to speak out against the brutality.

The former LoP’s post has been praised by many, including Dr Spire Ssentogo, a university professor who is among those who led a social media mob against Mpuuga.

Spire was the first to praise the former LoP’s “civility!” setting the tone for the outpouring of support that followed. Other users hailed the former LoP as a “diplomat” with unmatched level of “maturity”, and called for him to reconcile with Bobi Wine to champion change for the country.

“Maturity reasoning Mathias Mpuuga, among all at this time, you are a wise man,” Elly Byarugaba said.

“Way to go! Your tweet has made not just my day, week but the whole month. You have taken the right turn and looked in the right direction. Thank you sebo [sir], I applaud you.” Livingstone Wasswa commented on Mpuuga’s post.

“Great humility Mathias Mpuuga with the spirit of brotherhood and collective responsibility. Together against oppression,” Kenneth Jjemba said.

“Thanks honourable for showing maturity though we have always been against you, I pray for your reconciliation with Mr. President [Bobi Wine]”, a social media user only identified as Eddy said.

“Thanks for this kind of togetherness regardless of the hate against you by some of the part members and leaders, it’s the reason I myself will always stand with you…” Jonah Musanje commented on Mpuuga’s post.

“Thank you Hon. Mpuuga for showing us Diplomacy. Prayers to him,” Kayita Ali Sserubiri said.

“Written by a civilized person who put his pride away this time round. Thank you,” Nkerettanyi Kiruluuta said.

Based on the brutal way Bobi Wine and his cadets, cast doubt on whether the vengeance NUP leader would ever even consider it necessary to express sympathy if it were Mpuuga with the problem.

“That is why I like Mathias Mpuuga. If Mpuuga was the one treated like this, Bobi Wine wouldn’t even say anything or sympathize with the only reasonable LoP Mathias Mpuuga,” Pascal Sekyanzi said.

“Would he have said the same if it were you? You are letting us down, you should rather be silent about it,” Brian Wekesa said.

The Uganda Police’s brutal and high-handed attack on Bobi Wine has been widely condemned, with many calling for an explanation and demanding justice. The former LoP’s swift response has been seen as a beacon of hope, demonstrating that even in the face of adversity, leadership and character can prevail.

As the situation continues to unfold, one thing is clear: Mpuuga’s response has set a new standard for leadership in Uganda. His ability to put aside personal differences and speak out against injustice has earned him widespread respect and admiration.

In the end, the former LoP’s swift post has served as a powerful reminder that leadership is not about personal gain or vendettas, but about serving the greater good. His actions have inspired a nation, and will undoubtedly be remembered for years to come.
