Imam Idi Kasozi, a renowned political analyst, has said that the supposed war between National Unity Platform (NUP) leader Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine and the Democratic Alliance National Coordinator Mathias Mpuuga is being exaggerated by individuals seeking personal political benefits.
Speaking on NBSTV’s Morning Breeze show on April 15, 2025, Kasozi asserted that the controversy surrounding the Shs500M Mpuuga received as an ex-LoP upon expiry of his term of office was unnecessary.
“There is no conflict between Mpuuga and Kyagulanyi. Absolutely no. What is there was a disparity caused by a matter that needs a lot of critical thinking. To me, the hullabaloo around them since the Shs500M saga was unnecessary,” Imam Kasozi said.
Kasozi’s comment was part of his discussion on the recent meeting between the Nyendo-Mukugwe MP and Parliamentary Commissioner Mpuuga and Kyagulanyi in a church service to celebrate Kabaka’s 70th birthday at Lubaga Cathedral on April 13, 2025.
According to Kasozi, “The whole thing we are trying to talk about to me, is a sign that critically, there is no big difference between Mpuuga and Kyagulanyi. It is only individuals who want to benefit as individuals that are exaggerating the whole thing. That is my point.”
Shallowness in Politics
Kasozi attributed the problems between Mpuuga and Bobi Wine to shallowness in politics. “Shallowness in the way people look at politics is the cause of the problems,” the muslim cleric said.
He also believes that Bobi Wine and Mpuuga are equals, citing their similar leadership roles. “It is true they are equals. I have told you why they were seated like that…Those who organise such functions organise according to hierarchy and Mpuuga plus Kyagulanyi they may follow into the same category,” Kasozi who does not mince words on varied issues said.
Kasozi justified his argument, “[Bobi] being the president of NUP, and the other one [Mpuuga] having been the deputy president of NUP, having served as LoP, and the fact that he is not just an MP, but also a commissioner of Parliament. Therefore, both appearing at a function in a church, commemorating the 70th birthday of the Kabaka of Buganda to whom both subscribe as subjects, to me is a normal thing.”
“Unfortunately, because of ignorance and because people do not want to be advised, and because our people have largely lived in adversaries even where there is just a disparity, they want to call it conflict…,” he added.
Some insecure and opportunistic politicians in NUP, including LoP Joel Ssenyonyi, Muwanga Kivumbi (Butambala MP), Betty Nambooze (Mukono Municipality) and Patrick Nsamba Oshabe (Kassanda South) who were races to succeed Mpuuga first as LoP, deputy president Buganda region, and Commissioner of Parliament, have allegedly been stirring up trouble between Mpuuga and Bobi Wine.
They reportedly worked with party president Bobi Wine and secretary general Lewis Rubongoya to hire individuals like Theodore Ssekikubo (Lwemiyaga) to pressure first timer MPs into fighting Mpuuga with social media mob to character assassinate the resilient Nyendo-Mukungwe legislator even after the court declared the service award to Parliament Commissioners lawful.
