NUP Implodes: Fired Media Boss Pins Bobi On Colluding With Regime Bigwigs To Fail Struggle

A tornado is continuing within the National Unity Platform (NUP) party, as a former media boss has come forward with explosive allegations against party leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu alias Bobi Wine.

Charles Mpanga, who was a key member of Bobi’s digital media team until recently, claims that the NUP leader has been colluding with government security agents and bigwigs to fail the bigger struggle to remove Museveni from power, sparking a bitter internal conflict within the youngest opposition party.

The controversy has sent shockwaves through the NUP ranks, with many party loyalists turning from the allegations.

Mpanga’s claims have raised questions about the party’s internal dynamics and its ability to present a united front against the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party, whose leader Yoweri Museveni has ruled Uganda for the last 39 years.

According to Mpanga, Bobi Wine has been working closely with top government agents to among others, cause the arrest of legitimate supporters of NUP who blindly joined Bobi’s NUP to make what seemed to be a hard push against Museveni. The supporters’ arrests, according to Mpanga, have always been engineered by a Government operative identified as Muhumuza, whose work has been to trail the movements and identify those extreme and real supporters of Museveni ouster among the foot soldiers.

Save for the arrests largely aimed at neutralizing the determined young people to cause regime change, Mpanga also claims that other top government bigwigs provide Bobi Wine with financial support and strategic guidance, in exchange for influence within and outside the party.

Mpanga’s allegations against Bobi Wine are not unlikely as they collaborate with the revelations by General Muhoozi Kainerugaba who said early January that it is them that propped Bobi Wine to kill Besigye’s influence on the political scene.

“It was actually our idea (me and other Generals). We convinced Mzee that we can use Kabobi [Bobi Wine] to remove Besigye from being the kingpin of the opposition. After we supported him with a lot of money (and he succeeded) he started abusing us,” Muhoozi posted at 9:01 pm on January 5, 2025.

He further revealed that Bobi Wine enjoys Museveni’s massive protection.

“You are shocked by that? I haven’t even started on that Kabobi fool…let him run to Mzee [referring to President Museveni] for refuge as usual,” he added, “Kaboobi knows that the only person protecting him from me is my father. If Mzee was not there, I would cut off his head today!”

As such, Mpanga’s allegations have been met with fierce resistance from the NUP leadership, who have secretly reached out to some of the leaders wondering around as cornerstones of the party to dismiss Mpanga’s claims as “baseless” and “malicious.”

However, Mpanga insists that he has evidence to back up his claims, and is vowing to take his allegations to the public, should NUP leaders choose their grandstanding approach to challenges.

The controversy has sparked a heated debate within the NUP party, with some members calling for Bobi Wine to come clean about his dealings with government agents and bigwigs. Others have rallied to Bobi’s defense, accusing Mpanga of being a “mole” and a “traitor.”

However, sceptics have urged those expecting Bobi’s explanation on Mpanga’s allegations in reference to his loud silence on January’s shocking revelations regarding Bobi-Museveni dirty dealings by General Muhoozi.

On his part, an annoyed Mpanga vows to release a series of explosive recordings and documents that would implicate Bobi Wine in a web of deceit and financial transactions. The recordings and documents allegedly show Bobi Wine discussing strategy with Muhumuza, and receiving financial support from the government bigwigs.

“I have been with them for so long, and I know how they fight voices of reason, but I will not be silenced or intimidated,” Mpanga declared. “I will continue to expose the truth about Bobi Wine’s dealings with government agents. Enough is enough.”

The NUP party has been rocked by internal conflicts in recent months, with some members accusing Bobi Wine of being authoritarian and out of touch with the party’s grassroots supporters. Mpanga’s allegations have brought these tensions to the fore, and have raised questions about the party’s ability to survive the current crisis.

As the party is facing existential crisis that threatens to tear it apart, Mpanga allegations have sparked a wider debate about the state of Ugandan politics and the role of opposition parties in holding the government to account.
