NUP Leader Wine Says Party Broke, Can’t Help Olivia Lutaaya

The National Unity Platform (NUP) leader Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine has found himself in a precarious situation after revealing that neither he nor the party has the financial means to support Olivia Lutaaya’s recovery after her release from prison.

In a November 25th, 2024 statement, a copy of which we obtained, Bobi expressed his regret over the events that led to Lutaaya’s imprisonment, acknowledging the expectations placed on him and the party.

“I am issuing this statement to address public inquiries regarding my decision not to financially assist Olivia Lutaaya following her release from Prison,” Bobi said, “I deeply regret the events that led to her imprisonment 4 years ago by the regime, and I understand the expectations placed on me and the party.”

However, he cited severe financial challenges as the reason for their inability to contribute financially.

“The party and its members are facing significant financial difficulties, and our resources are extremely limited because of the restrictions put on us by the regime,” he explained.

Bobi revealed that the party’s priority at this time is stability, especially as they prepare for the next general elections.

“While we could do more, we must prioritize the party’s stability at this time especially as we prepare for the next general elections,” he said.

Despite this, Bobi assured that they will remain committed to finding other ways to support Lutaaya’s recovery.

Bobi called upon fellow Ugandans and NUP supporters to contribute to the Olivia Lutaaya fund.

“This decision is not made lightly, and we shall remain committed to finding other possible ways to support our comrade Olivia Lutaaya in her recovery,” he said.

However, this move has been met with skepticism, with some Ugandans accusing Bobi of exploiting Lutaaya’s situation to enlarge his personal financial base, according to our earlier story emanating from discontentment a section of online Ugandans expressed a couple of days ago.

This controversy stems from Bobi’s X post, in which he solicited financial donations to Lutaaya through his personal aide Nambi’s mobile numbers, rather than Lutaaya’s own contacts.

As the NUP prepares for the next general elections, it remains to be seen how this controversy will affect their chances. One thing is certain, however: the party’s handling of Lutaaya’s situation has left a sour taste in the mouths of many Ugandans.
