NUP MP Muwanga’s Desperate Behaviour Sparks Calls For Change In Butambala

Shockwaves reverberated through Butambala district headquarters as MP Muwanga Kivumbi (NUP) resorted to physical altercations to settle disagreements with his constituents.

The MP who is also the Chairperson of the Buganda Caucus in Parliament, known for his articulate nature, had been invited to help harmonize disputes between district councilors and their chairperson, Rashida Namboowa last week. However, his presence only ignited further tensions.

A section of his constituents confronted him, accusing him of being the mastermind behind the ongoing disagreements within the district. His accusers vehemently argued that he was not the right person to mediate, given his alleged role in “fuelling the conflicts” within the district.

Muwanga’s response was dismissive and aggressive, telling them never to “vote me again.”

The constituents stood their ground, replying that they had seen through his “intrigues” and vowed never to “vote you again, we have our person we are going to vote.” Muwanga’s anger boiled over, and he accused them of being “paid little money” to confront him whenever he visited the district. He claimed they were “free to vote for whomever they pleased.”

The exchange escalated, and the situation descended into chaos as the MP and the angry residents engaged in a physical fight. This was not the first time the MP had faced confrontation from his voters, with a similar incident occurring less than two months prior.

The repeated confrontations speak to the fading popularity of the MP who has represented the constituency in the central region for over a decade. Muwanga faces stiff competition from political opponents, particularly Mukiibi Erias Sserunjogi, a journalist who is steadily winning the hearts of the people.

Mukiibi’s campaign against Muwanga has gained traction among the youth, women, and influential Muslims, including the Supreme Mufti Sheikh Muhammad Galabuzi who recently visited him in the constituency. Muwanga’s desperate behavior suggests he is struggling to maintain his grip on the constituency.

As the fight between Muwanga and the constituents ensued, it became clear that Muwanga’s leadership was under siege. His inability to engage with his constituents peacefully has raised questions about his suitability to represent them again.

The people of Butambala constituency are demanding change, and Muwanga’s actions may have inadvertently paved the way for his opponents to capitalize on his declining popularity. The incident serves as a stark reminder that leaders must listen to their people and address their concerns, lest they face the consequences of their discontent.
