NUP Security Team Foils Muwanga’s Attempt To Occupy Bobi’s Seat At Party Headquarters

The security team manning the gates of the leading opposition party, the National Unity Platform (NUP), has thwarted the attempt by the Deputy President in charge of Buganda, Muhammad Muwanga Kivumbi, to assert his authority at the party headquarters.
From April 5, 2025, to date, the top NUP leaders, including party President Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine, party Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya, and the Leader of Opposition in Parliament (LoP), who is also the party spokesperson, have been away on a tour and engagement in London. Saasi Marvin, Secretary for Diaspora Affairs, accompanied them.
The absence of these key party leaders has since created a power vacuum, which the brand new Deputy President Muwanga saw as an opportunity to make his move.
Sources privy to the incident said Muwanga made his attempt early morning of April 10, 2025. A celebrated talker, the Deputy President arrived at the party headquarters, ready to occupy the principal’s office, at least for a week.
However, he was met with resistance from the security team, who refused to grant him access to the premises.
“I am a Deputy President, and without the President in the country, I automatically become the President. You know that the President [Bobi Wine] has always told everyone, publicly, that where he is not, I am the one in charge on his behalf. So, I have come to perform my duties from here,” the jolly deputy president reportedly told the security team at the gate.
However, the security team was unconvinced by Muwanga’s reasoning, telling him off, “We know you guys of DP block. You cannot be trusted at all. You [Muwanga] want to take over the President’s seat and then refuse to vacate it when he comes back,” the leader of the security team retorted.
The security team made it clear that they had no instructions from President Bobi Wine to allow anyone to access the premises in his absence.
“By the way, the president never told us to allow anybody to access these premises without his permission. You can either give us his [Bobi Wine] instructions to you in writing or call him on the phone to guide us. If you fail to do that, drive your car and take your wiseakering away from here before we swing into action,” the security head told the Deputy President.
Other equally tough security personnel even referenced Muwanga’s past behavior, saying, “We know you are good at scheming and outshining our leaders when they delegate you to perform certain roles in their absence. That is what you did when the LoP [Joel] left you in acting capacity.”
“Under unclear circumstances, you went on CBS on Wednesday [April 9th, 2025] to overhype yourself as the acting LoP for a whole week, and we also know what you did during the coffee bill issues, and how you tried to overshadow our leaders for you to shine. Keep those hypocritical politics at Parliament. We cannot allow you to extend it to the president himself,” he added.
On hearing from Bobi’s security team’s tough stance, Muwanga had no choice but to retreat; he knew his plan had been foiled.
He drove to Parliament from where he summarily invited a few of the opposition MPs, largely from the NUP, into an opposition caucus meeting, from where he made hasty pronouncements regarding the Shs100m allegedly given to MPs by the Government, all in an attempt to salvage the situation.
Those who know how Muwanga operates, Muwanga is on a mission to show that he is better than the substantive LoP Joel Ssenyonyi in performing the role he schemed to get for a lengthy period only for Bobi to ditch him for his buddy Joel.
It is on record that Muwanga was not happy with Joel’s appointment to the extent that he walked out of the meeting that resolved on the current LoP prematurely after he reportedly told the meeting that he could not allow to be “led by a political novice.”
