Traders United: Kampala Business Community Demands Presidential Attention
Kampala traders, under the Kampala City Traders Association (KACITA), have announced a shutdown of businesses until President Museveni directly addresses their pressing concerns. The traders are protesting the implementation of the Electronic Fiscal Receipting and Invoicing System (EFRIS) and high taxes, which they claim are suffocating their businesses.
Following the President’s cancellation of a scheduled meeting on July 31, KACITA spokesperson Isa Ssekitto expressed the traders’ frustration. “We need the President to engage with us respectfully and address our grievances. Our businesses are our livelihoods, and we cannot continue under the weight of these taxes and the EFRIS system.”
The traders also expressed dissatisfaction with Kampala Minister Minsa Kabanda, accusing her of neglecting their issues. Feeling disrespected and neglected, the traders have taken drastic action, shutting down operations to compel the President to prioritize their concerns.
The shutdown is expected to have significant economic repercussions, as Kampala’s trading sector is vital to the city’s economy. KACITA hopes the action will prompt President Museveni to engage in meaningful discussions. The protest highlights broader challenges faced by business owners in Uganda, including regulatory pressures and the need for supportive government policies.
As the shutdown is announced, all eyes are on President Museveni’s response to the traders’ demands. The situation remains tense, with traders determined to keep businesses closed until they receive a satisfactory response from the President. The coming days will be critical in determining the future of Kampala’s trading community and its relationship with the government.
