Trump’s Victory Spells Doom For NUP Finances, Bobi’s LGBTQ+ Agenda In Jeopardy

Donald Trump’s shocking victory in the U.S. presidential election sent shockwaves through Uganda’s leading opposition party, the National Unity Platform (NUP).

As a key beneficiary of funding from US-based gay lobby groups, NUP had backed Democratic candidate Kamala Harris, who lost to Trump with a margin of over 4 million votes in the popular vote. In the electoral college vote, Harris garnered 226 votes against Trump’s 312, a significant deficit that sealed her fate.

Several NUP gay activists living in the U.S. who had signed up as volunteers for the Democrats were, according to sources, left disappointed after the declaration of Trump as the elected 47th U.S. president. Their disappointment was physical, a blatant contrast to the jubilation that had gripped them just days before.

Crisis Meeting

At NUP headquarters in Kavule, near Kampala, top party executives convened to discuss the implications of the election results on party finances, which we have reliably established.

A source revealed that Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine’s congratulatory message to Trump was belated and lacked enthusiasm. However, in the same message, Bobi Wine also praised Harris for running an “outstanding campaign and committing to a peaceful transfer of power, a glaring divergence from Trump’s refusal to concede to Biden in the 2020 elections.

“We also congratulate Vice President Kamala Harris for running an outstanding campaign. We appreciate her for being true to the cherished democratic values and committing to a peaceful transfer of power to the new government-a dream that continues to elude us in Uganda and indeed many countries on the African continent,” Bobi said in the conclusion of his November 7th post on X.

Bobi Wine’s message was seen as a delicate balancing act, aiming to maintain relations with the U.S. while upholding NUP’s values. By commending Harris’ commitment to democracy, Bobi Wine negligibly distanced NUP from Trump’s largely divisive rhetoric.

On the campaign trail, Trump promised to pass legislation establishing that the only genders recognized by the U.S. government are male and female, assigned at birth.

“On day one, I will sign a new executive order instructing every federal agency to cease all programs that promote the concept of sex and gender transition at any stage,” an open Trump said.

If implemented, it will cripple the activities of various LGBTQ+ organizations that NUP relies on for funding.

From the crisis meeting, it was resolved that NUP shift focus to securing funding from European LGBTQ+ groups, particularly in the U.K., Netherlands, and Germany on suspicion that USA under Trump will no longer be a smooth ally to any groups fond of LGBTQ+ funding, some NUP leaders, inclusive. The party’s reliance on international funding and support has become increasingly vulnerable.

The US election results sparked anxiety among NUP supporters, many of whom feared the implications of Trump’s victory on Uganda’s LGBTQ+ community. With Harris’ loss, NUP’s funding and ideological alignment were under threat.

As NUP navigates this uncertain new era, its leaders must reassess their strategies and alliances.

Vague

It is worth noting that Bobi Wine’s stance on LGBTQ+ rights has been a subject of controversy. While he has expressed support for human rights and dignity for all individuals, including homosexuals, he has not always been clear or consistent in his messaging.

For instance, during an interview on Veritas Radio-Soroti this week in his ongoing countrywide tours, Bobi Wine did not explicitly state his position on homosexuality, leaving many wondering about his true stance. This ambiguity has led to criticism from some quarters, with many calling for clarity on his views regarding LGBTQ+ rights.

Despite the controversy, Bobi Wine’s NUP party has faced internal criticism for his ambiguous stance on LGBTQ+ rights. Some NUP members have openly disagreed with his views, and there are concerns that his position may alienate conservative voters.
