The Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) on January 23, 2025, released the 2024 Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE) results, showing that boys outperformed girls for the third year running.

According to the results, 45,203 boys (12.09%) passed in Division One, while 39,098 girls (9.46%) achieved the same feat. Boys also led in Division Two, with 192,546 (51.50%) passing, compared to 205,043 girls (49.63%).

UNEB Executive Director Dan Odongo noted that while boys performed better in the top divisions, girls outnumbered boys in Division Two and lower divisions due to higher registration and completion rates.

However, Odongo expressed concern over some schools registering normal pupils as special needs candidates to gain extra time. “This practice is unacceptable and undermines the integrity of the examinations,” he warned.

The 2024 PLE results show a slight improvement in overall performance, with 51.5% of candidates obtaining Division Two. However, the number of candidates scoring Division One dropped compared to 2023.

As the education sector digests the results, stakeholders are calling for increased efforts to address the gender gap and ensure fairness in the examination process.
