MPs led by Busia Municipality MP Geoffrey Macho are advocating for the late Muhammad Ssegirinya’s will, banning the NUP deputy Spokesperson Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro to be respected to the dot.
During a special parliamentary sitting to pay tribute to Ssegirinya on January 10, 2025, Macho argued the Speaker of Parliament Anita Among to ensure that the late MP’s words are respected in his death.
This comes after a public fallout between Ssegirinya and NUP party official Mufumbiro, shortly after he was released on bail from custody where he had spent over 500 days alongside Makindye West counterpart Allan Ssewanyana.
In a mocking attack, Mufumbiro had accused Ssegirinya of conspiring with Kampala Central MP Muhammad Nsereko to blackmail NUP’s leader Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine who had abandoned Ssegirinya in what he termed as their orchestrated plan to “blossom” President Yoweri Museveni.
“You are just inviting people like [Muhammad] Nsereko to politically resurrect them under the guise of fundraising for you. Whom has he fundraised for before? Did he become a good Samaritan? Is Nsereko, a whole MP at the level of being on a phone? A leader must find solutions not engaged in seeking help,” Mufumiro who was in the US at the time said.
A motor mouth Mufumbiro alleged that Ssegirinya was faking his illness as part of the scheme. “You are just inviting people like [Muhammad] Nsereko to politically resurrect them under the guise of fundraising for you,” Mufumbiro said.
“You [Ssegirinya] are in a plot to downgrade President [Bobi Wine’s] name as you blossom Museveni that he is magnanimous whereas not…we all tap the power to connect with people from Robert Kyagulanyi, and how can you get the impetus to do a Facebook live with Nsereko?,” Mufumbiro added.
A blabbering Mufumbiro said, “I know how you [Ssegirinya and Nsereko] plotted this whole thing, and I am telling you must change your ways. At the press conference, you had a bandage on your hand, and when you came to my home, you did not have it, and you came home without it, and you left your hand in the car.”
“I know this and I compelled you [Ssegirinya] my brother to come and explain to the world what was in place, Ssegirinya you never came to explain to the nation. Suddenly, Nsereko has come claiming he loves you so much and that you called him, but I know you strategized about this,” Mufumbiro claimed.
“You can lie to all people, but you cannot lie to me. When you went to parliament, you knelt on the steps of parliament up to the deputy speaker’s office.” Mufumbiro said.
Mufumbiro asked, “how come you were able to negotiate with the Speaker on your court cases relating to the academic qualifications? Do not drag us into a circus when our people are dying. Stop putting us at ransom. Stop blackmailing us, stop blackmailing our president on issues you think we do not see, we are not dwarfed people, we are on the issue of removing the dictator.”
Ssegirinya banned Mufumbiro
When he returned home after seeking medical attention, Ssegrinya explicitly asked his mother to prevent Mufumbiro from attending his burial, strictly requesting her to get a basin full of soil and pour it onto him.
“How could I get sick to the level of kissing death and the man utters such unfounded words? If I died, he could have come to bury me, he should never be allowed to attend my burial in the name of Allah…,” a tearful Ssegirinya said, “that statement haunted me from my sick bed, and it will never go away from my life.”
Ssegirinya asserted, “according to what doctors told me, I will die before him, but Mufumbiro should never come to bury me.”
NUP Defies Ssegirinya’s Will
Despite Ssegirinya’s public words against Mufumbiro, the latter was seen seated in the front row during a vigil for Ssegirinya at the NUP party headquarters on January 9, 2025, which did not sit well with some Ugandans, especially on social media platforms.
No wonder, during the tribute session, Macho raised it on the floor of Parliament.
“Madam Speaker, there are some people Hon Segirinya listed in his party that they should never step on his grave because they said that he was pretending that he was sick,” Macho said, “these people should not step on the grave of Hon. Ssegirinya because I saw them crying more.”
“Why are they crying more than the relatives of Ssegirinya? Why are they crying? Words of living people should be taken seriously when they die.”
During the same session, Macho also asked Ssegirinya who had nicknamed “Mr Update” on earth to update God about the state of Uganda’s politics and legal system.
“Ssegirinya Muhammad, report to God how you have been part of a mingled and disorganized political party,” Macho said.
Macho praised Ssegirinya’s leadership qualities, dedication to his constituents, and advocacy for social justice. He also thanked the Speaker of Parliament and other leaders for their support during Ssegirinya’s tenure.
Ssegirinya passed away on Thursday at Rubaga Hospital after a prolonged illness. He was 37 years old. Preparations are underway for his burial, scheduled for Sunday, January 12, in Masaka District.
