The Democratic Front (DF) has announced the dates for its open delegates’ conference and official launch, marking a major milestone in the party’s journey towards shaping Uganda’s political environment.
According to Mathias Mpuuga, the DF National Coordinator and Interim DF Coordinator, the party will invoke Article 12 (1) (e) to hold a special delegates’ conference on June 26, 2025, and its official launch on June 27, 2025, at Laston Gardens in Masaka City.
Speaking at a news conference on June 17, 2025, Mpuuga, who was flanked by top party officials, including Kimaanya-Kabonera MP Dr. Abed Bwanika, Samuel Lubega Mukaaku, Henry Lubowa, and Ismail Ssemyalo Mulambuuzi, among others, addressed several key issues.
Started with addressing a pressing concern regarding the recent older persons’ elections, which he claimed were marred by irregularities at the hands of the Electoral Commission.
“I would like to raise a red flag to political parties in the opposition that we have warned severally to get out of their excitement and focus and get to understand that the electoral exercise is not a ritual,” Mpuuga said, “It is a very serious national matter that everybody must pay attention but most importantly to know that it’s not about results but also the process to get the final results.”
Mpuuga also extended an invitation to Justice Byabakama, the EC chairperson, urging him to assure the nation of a credible, free, and fair electoral process.
“I would like to invite Justice Byabakama to rise and inform the nation that he will deliver a credible, free, and fair electoral process…” Mpuuga said.
DF Events
Moving on to the party’s upcoming events, Mpuuga explained that the special delegates’ conference would be a forum to elect the interim National Executive Committee (NEC) of the DF.
“Relatedly, the launch will be preceded by a special delegates’ Conference of the DF still in Masaka and it will be a forum to elect the national executive committee of the DF because apparently we do not have a complete executive, I am only speaking to you as the coordinator, and on 26th, we shall elect the NEC,” he said.
On their X handle, the DF explained that it is due to time constraints that they are holding a special delegates’ conference as opposed to a substantive one.
“The Democratic Front to invoke Article 12 (1) (e) of the Party Constitution to hold a special delegates’ conference on June 26, 2025, to elect the interim National Executive Committee (NEC). This is being dictated by the limited time available for the DF to hold a substantive Delegates Conference before the next general elections,” they announced on their official X handle.
The DF Electoral Commission, chaired by Ssemyalo Ismail Mulambuuzi with eight other members, including three women, has already opened up doors to interested DF members who wish to express interest in various positions, and Mpuuga encouraged all eligible members to turn up at the party offices to submit their records.
For those interested in contesting for positions in the forthcoming national elections, Ssemyalo clarified that they would need to possess a DF membership card, a national identification card, and original academic qualifications.
The call for expressions of interest, Mpuuga said, puts to rest speculations about whether the DF will field candidates in the elections.
“For members of the DF who would like to contest for the various positions in the forthcoming national elections, please present yourselves to Mr. Ssemyalo’s Commission, starting 17th June to 30th July, 2025… that call for expression of interest ends all speculations on whether the DF will field candidates in the forthcoming elections…”, Mpuuga said.
As the party prepares for its official launch, Mpuuga extended an invitation to all supporters, members, and Ugandans of goodwill to join them in Masaka on June 27th.
“I would like to invite our supporters, our members, all Ugandans of goodwill to join us in Masaka on 27th for the official launch of the Democratic Front,” he said.
The DF’s decision to hold its delegates’ conference and official launch in Masaka City underscores the party’s commitment to engaging with citizens and promoting democratic values.
