NUP’s Bobi In Panic As Top Lobbyist Among LGBTQ+ Community, Western Powers Opiyo Decamps Over Greed, Nepotism

The National Unity Platform (NUP) president Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine, leaves in extreme panic after Nicolas Opiyo, the soft-spoken, but prominent lobbyist in the lesbian, gay, transgender, queer/questioning, plus (LGBTQ+) and the western  powers, abruptly abandoned his role(s) citing greed, and nepotism at the party.

With access to Western decision-makers, Opiyo was pivotal in shaping the international perceptions of the opposition leader’s agenda, particularly within the LGBTQ+ advocacy sphere. His influence and network secured, and is continuing crucial funding that fuels the party’s initiatives, especially in support of LGBTQ+ rights in Uganda.

Opiyo’s sudden departure sent shockwaves through the opposition party’s ranks, leaving many to wonder about the implications for the NUP’s already fragile dynamics.

The fluent English speaker made the startling revelation during a prominent visual radio talk-show on July 26, 2025. Speaking candidly, he expressed his disillusionment with a long-time friend and perceived ally, stating that he initially believed they were united in a genuine cause for regime change. However, he soon came to understand that the ghetto star cum politician was motivated by a desire for personal, family and friends’ financial gain at the expense of the citizens.

Opiyo shared his concerns about the internal dynamics within the opposition party, suggesting that the focus has shifted away from building robust institutions towards a troubling nepotism involving family and close associates.

“And the last thing is this perhaps this is an NRM problem. The fusion between not just family, but also closer associates. I think my brother and good friend Bobi has not let go of his musical group and those who are close to the party will tell you that many of those guys have strong views within the party and over and above people who are seen as oriented towards managing of politics,” Counsel Opiyo said.

He pointedly critiqued the party’s structure, highlighting that there has been no effective strategy to enhance its strength. Instead, it appears to be increasingly dominated by personal relationships rather than ideology.

“And he [Bobi] has that musical group around him who are royal, who are around him and that in many ways impedes the growth and progress of the party, and I think that they have in y view faced an existential question and they must make tough decision, if they do not do that, they risk being irrelevant.”

Without mincing words, Opiyo elaborated on what he deemed rampant greed among party leadership, lamenting that many national executive committee (NEC) members hold multiple positions within the party, a practice that undermines effective governance.

He specifically pointed out Joel Ssenyonyi who serves both as the party spokesperson and leader of the opposition in Parliament (LoP), questioning the viability of such dual responsibilities.

“A party that is dedicated to process would say, look you are very busy rallying the opposition [in Parliament] which is also a busy job, let us have somebody else to speak for the party,” Nicolas remarked, emphasizing the need for clear delineation of roles within the party’s structure. He also alluded to a culture that safeguards familial ties over meritocratic advancement.

This brings to light the alarming case of a senior party figure, Fred Nyanzi Ssentamu who is the senior brother to Bobi Wine previously serving as secretary for national mobilization, who was widely accused of abusing his position to extort money from unsuspecting party members affiliated with the party in the last election, going by numerous testimonies.

In another troubling development ahead of the 2026 elections, the president’s brother, now holding the position of secretary for Diaspora affairs despite glaring English language barriers, has been implicated by former Kawempe North MP Latif Ssebaggalas in blatant influence peddling, raising serious ethical concerns about the integrity of the leading opposition party.

Bobi Not Spared

The situation took a darker turn when Ali Bukeni alias Nubian Li, a close musical partner and friend of the party president Bobi invoked his tyranical powers to give him a seemless race.

When Li a powerful member of the NUP NEC, expressed interest in Nakawa mayoral run, the president Bobi shamelessly coerced Li’s main contender Godfrey Luyombya into compliance in pulling out of race in favour of his friend Li.

Who Was Opiyo to Bobi?

Renowned as a staunch defender of LGBTQ+ rights,Opiyo has been instrumental in crafting strategies to counter Bobi’s political threats, including efforts to confront vocal MPs like Abed Bwanika, Mathias Mpuuga, te ex-Lop who passionately supported the Anti-Homosexuality Act, 2023. In the aftermath of the AHA’s passage, Bobi asserted that the controversial legislation targets him and the NUP by jeopardizing the critical financial resources tied to their advocacy.

Opiyo also led a botched court petition against the Anti-Homosexuality Act while tirelessly advocating for Western nations to impose sanctions on Ugandan officials labeled corrupt. Nonetheless, their joint sanction petition against some key figures especially Mpuuga was hindered when the U.S. accepted the latter to observe its elections after an investigation into the alleged involvement in corruption marking a significant setback to the largely petty opposition.
