In a fiery speech delivered at the National Unity Platform’s convention in Boston on August 10, 2025, the party president Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, commonly known as Bobi Wine, criticized U.S. President Donald Trump and his administration’s new travel policies.

The Ugandan opposition leader’s scathing remarks against super power president remarks came in light of the delays experienced by key party members in obtaining travel visas from the US Embassy in Kampala, particularly Olivia Lutaaya, the Ex-NUP prisoner, and Jolly Jackline Tukamushaba, the NUP deputy president in charge of Western region, which Bobi contended hindered their participation in the large fundraising event.

“We had announced that amidst us we were supposed to be with a very powerful woman called Olivia Lutaaya, and another powerful woman called Jolly Jackline Tukamushaba, our deputy president for Western Uganda,” Bobi told the captivated audience in Boston.

The absence of these influential figures frustrated Bobi, who perceived the visa delays as a direct obstacle to would be the main crowd-pullers given the past experience of especially Olivia Lutaaya who became the major source of party’s sympathy card imposed by the U.S. government.

“They [Olivia and Jolly] were not able to be with us because their visas delayed. It’s you who voted that wicked man [Trump], eh? I hope they (U.S. government) have not heard and understood what I meant, but I know they [Olivia and Jolly] have been with us in spirit,” he stated, expressing both anger and disappointment in the administration’s stance.

The new US travel policies were implemented as part of a broader agenda that critics argue discriminates against African nations, including Uganda.

These regulations complicate visa acquisitions, creating barriers for travelers like Bobi’s associates, who are vital to his campaign efforts that mostly call for sympathy from those interested in funding his campaign for the forthcoming 2026 presidential elections.

In a heartfelt moment, Bobi extended his love and appreciation to Olivia Lutaaya, stressing her importance within the NUP’s struggle.

“Olivia Lutaaya, we send love to you, we appreciate you. Last year, we lost our deputy President Mama Jolly Mugisha, may her soul rest in eternal peace; we continue representing her and standing for the values that she stood for,” he expressed.

Concluding his address, Bobi prepared to energize his supporters, declaring, “I don’t want to come back here [in Boston next year] as an opposition leader, no. Let us enjoy, let us dance because we are going to the promised land.”

We Are In Comedy Fashion

Earlier in the program, Joel Ssenyonyi, the Leader of the Opposition, humorously labeled Kyagulanyi as “our President in a comedy fashion” while reinforcing the group’s hope that they would have a true president in the near future.

“Now, we are telling you that Bobi is our President in a comedy fashion, but we shall get back here one day soon with the president in reality,” Ssenyonyi remarked.

During the event, Ssenyonyi also announced the launch of Bobi’s official campaign poster for the people in the Diaspora as it were the case to Ugandans.

“As we officially launched the official poster for the next president of Uganda for Ugandans, we need to do it again for the Diaspora team too,” he said.

Bobi’s outspoken criticism of Trump’s administration, particularly regarding the treatment of visa applications, could potentially lead to diplomatic tensions between the NUP and the U.S.

While Bobi and his party have historically found common ground among the LGBTQ+ community, especially in the United States, Bobi’s remarks may complicate those relations given Trump’s well-known stance against LGBTQ+ rights.
