In a passionate appeal for civic engagement, Democratic Front (DF) President Mathias Mpuuga has called upon responsible Ugandans to actively take part in the upcoming 2026 general elections.
Speaking shortly after the Jubilee Year Mass at Blessed Sacrament Kimaanya parish on August 17, 2025, presided over by Bishop Severus Jjumba of Masaka Diocese, Mpuuga emphasized the critical importance of informed participation in leadership selection.
The Sunday Mass marked a considerable event in the ongoing celebrations by the Catholic Church worldwide to commemorate the Jubilee year, aimed at supporting faith, and promoting spiritual growth among its members.
His speech served as a platform for Mpuuga to underscore the essential role of the electorate in shaping the country’s future, insisting that apathy in choosing leaders could lead to a governance void filled by those lacking integrity in society.
The Nyendo-Mukungwe area MP Mpuuga cautioned that if reasonable citizens choose to disengage from the electoral process, and leave critical decisions to others, they risk relinquishing their nation’s future to individuals who may not have the nation’s best interests at heart.
He thus urged that allowing the less reputable to take the reins could undermine the progress and welfare of the country.
In the same address, Mpuuga expressed his gratitude towards the mother church for offering moral guidance on matters of leadership thus commended the Episcopal Conference for its recent pastoral letter, which reinforced calls for electoral, and constitutional reforms ahead of the important electoral cycle.
The letter, released by Kiyinda-Mityana Diocese Bishop Anthony Zziwa, the Chairperson of the Episcopal Conference, echoed the intentional call for the need for revised electoral laws to ensure that the upcoming elections are peaceful, free, and fair.
Despite this notable ecclesiastical guidance, Mpuuga wondered how many actors in the opposition have chosen to downplay the urgency of such reforms which they aggressively fought, instead focusing their energies on competing for political positions rather than uniting for meaningful change in electoral laws.
This reluctance to confront reform challenges reflects a worrying trend where rhetoric outpaces action in the political fray.
Moreover, during his remarks, Mpuuga noted the contradictions within the political sphere, as some members of the opposition who previously dismissed the elections are now regrouping to compete without the desired reforms in place.
Mpuuga’s impassioned plea underscores the fundamental duty of every citizen to engage thoughtfully in their democratic rights, asserting that their participation is vital to safeguarding the future governance of Uganda. As the nation gears up for the pivotal 2026 elections, the call to action from the Democratic Front leader serves as a reminder of the importance of informed, and responsible voting.
