On August 29, 2025, Gulu City pulsed with optimism as the Democratic Front (DF) embarked on a transformative journey by inaugurating its coordination office in Northern region.

The momentous event comes at a time when the greater North of Uganda is gradually mending from the deep wounds inflicted by the long-standing conflict led by Joseph Kony.

The gathering was lively, noticeable by the presence of the DF’s president, Mathias Mpuuga, who introduced Kevin Anena as the newly appointed Deputy President for Northern Uganda. Accompanied by key party officials including Pascal Amuriat (Deputy President, Eastern region), and Michael Mabikke (Secretary General), Samuel Lubega Mukaaku, along with supporters from the region, the air was thick with joy, and expectation.

Mpuuga began by sharing his excitement for the occasion, acknowledging the long, and difficult path leading to this moment.

He emphasized the connotation of the day, recognizing not just his role but the collective efforts and sacrifices made by the people of Acholi, Lango, and West Nile.

His heartfelt words resonated deeply, celebrating the unity and resilience of the local communities.

Earlier that day, Mpuuga had visited a cultural institution and was met with a warm reception, which, he illustrated, was a gesture of blessing from the gods of Acholi, evident in the rain that followed, a symbol he cherished as a positive omen. As he spoke, it was apparent that he felt a profound connection to the people he was addressing, reinforcing the warmth and hopes they shared.

When Mpuuga introduced Anena, he painted her as an extraordinary leader, one whose commitment to the DF was unwavering despite offers from competing political factions.

He expressed confidence in her ability to rally the community and lead them toward a promising future.

As he closed his speech, he highlighted the DF’s rapid growth, noting their parliamentary presence despite being a young party, and reinforcing support for their formidable candidate, Lucy Aciro, the former Aruu North MP.

Anena’s Maiden Speech

Taking her turn to address the crowd, Kevin Anena captivated her audience with her vision for the region and its leadership.

She articulated the widespread discontent with the current political climate and emphasized the DF’s arrival as a beacon of hope.

Anena described Acholi as a region yearning for effective leadership and underlined her dedication to harnessing local talent and potential.

Her vision encompassed a Uganda built on unity and transition towards a brighter future, away from the shadows of political instability.

Anena expressed her commitment to uplifting the region by collaborating closely with the talented individuals within the DF framework.

She articulated the pressing need for truth from leaders, resonating with the desires of the Acholi people who sought authentic representation after years of adversity.

With a call for collective action, she encouraged her fellow party members to tap into their shared passion for patriotic unity and progress, reminding them that while the DF was still finding its foothold, their efforts could drive substantial change for the nation.

Her impassioned speech left a profound impact, stirring the crowd with a renewed sense of purpose and hope.

The day marked not only the inception of a new political chapter for the DF in Northern Uganda but also served as a rallying point for a community striving for a brighter, more unified future. With leaders like Anena at the helm, the aspirations of those who have long been marginalized began to take shape, fostering a collective optimism for the times to come.
