Embattled Makindye West MP Allan Ssewanyana has confessed to feeling betrayed by Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine, the leader of National Unity Platform (NUP).
After openly accusing former Leader of Opposition Mathias Mpuuga of orchestrating his imprisonment alongside his comrade late Muhammad Ssegirinya, Ssewanyana now claims he was coerced into this betrayal by NUP President Bobi Wine, who is said to have promised him political security in form of a party ticket in return for his actions.
Ssewanyana’s tumultuous journey began on the morning of April 6, 2025, when he received an urgent phone call from NUP deputy president Muhammad Muwanga Kivumbi, informing him that Bobi Wine needed to speak to him.
“I tried to ask him to give me some time to consult with my team, but the deputy president insisted that it would be better to do it because the president was willing to forgive me for all my ‘sins’,” Ssewanyana recounted.
Muwanga’s call, Ssewanyaa said, led him to a clandestine meeting that would change the course of his political career.
Upon arriving at NUP’s offices in Kavule, Ssewanyana found himself in a boardroom surrounded by key party figures, including Bobi Wine, Muwanga Kivumbi, Lewis Rubongoya (Secretary General), Joel Ssenyonyi (LoP), Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro (deputy party spokesperson), Benjamin Katana (National Treasurer), Nubian Li, among others.
“Muwanga introduced me to the President [Bobi Wine] telling him, ‘Mr President, here is Honourable Ssewanyana as you directed me to deliver him for our deal you know well, and he told me he is ready to effectively execute it’”
As he was introduced, he said, “I wondered which deal,” but was quickly silenced by the ominous atmosphere of the meeting.
Bobi Wine outlined a strategy that implicated Mpuuga in Ssewanyana’s arrest, framing it as a necessary measure in their ongoing political war against Mpuuga.
“I wondered which deal, but as I was raising my hand to seek clarification about it, I was shut up by both Muwanga and Bobi Wine. On that point, he started talking to me. As you know, we are in a war with Mathias Mpuuga, but we feel there is something missing as Shs500m service award seems to have lost steam, and overworked,”Ssewanyana said.
Bobi declared, “Now, we want to launch a fresh one. The other day, we informed the nation that he is the one who arrested comrade Eddie Mutwe, Achilleo Kivumbi, And Wakabi Smart in Masaka, but we find it not enough to make him appear a bad character in the society. Now this meeting you see here, has resolved that we should also find a possible way to link him to your arrests with comrade Ssegirinya regarding the deadly bijambiya killings in Masaka shortly after 2021 elections,” Ssewanyana said, Bobi further briefed him.
“We have been thinking through how to do it, and who should rely it to public so that it becomes believable, and the only person is you the Honourable Ssewanyana who was in the prison. So, I ask you comrade Ssewanyana to help this war against Mpuuga who is becoming a hard nut for us to crack to become easier,” Bobi reportedly explained to Ssewanyana, according to the legislator.
The meeting’s agenda took a darker turn as Ssewanyana was urged to publicly accuse Mpuuga of being the mastermind to his imprisonment following the infamous bijambiya killings in Masaka after the 2021 elections. “I was in a state of shock,” Ssewanyana admitted, grappling with the moral implications of the request.
Despite his apprehensions, Bobi pressed on, asserting, “if I rejected his directive… it would mean dire consequences for me especially politically.”
In a moment of stark intimidation, Bobi offered Ssewanyana two options: publicly pin Mpuuga or face severe repercussions, including losing his NUP ticket and his parliamentary career altogether.
“I asked them to give some time to think,” Ssewanyana recalled, but the pressure was unrelenting. He felt compelled to comply, and the meeting was swiftly adjourned to step into the public eye.
“I felt shivering, but I had no way out,” he admitted, illustrating the anxiety that engulfed him as he prepared to deliver the public statement that would forever alter his relationship with Mpuuga.
Until September 29, 2025, Ssewanyana was assured of the party ticket only to get stunned to discover that despite his compliance, his name was missing from NUP’s list of candidates for the 2026 elections.
“I was forced by Bobi to frame Honourable Mpuuga as the mastermind of our arrest after promising me a party ticket,” he reflected. The betrayal was not just political; it felt deeply personal.
The regret of being a political pawn has weighed heavily on Ssewanyana.
“I was imprisoned for more than 2 years for no crime committed. I was forced by Bobi to frame Honourable Mpuuga as the mastermind of our arrest after promising me a party ticket. I regret it, and feel betrayed by Bobi Wine, and I am ashamed to even see Honourable Mpuuga face-to-face and many other members of the public,” Ssewanyana now lamented, expressing a sense of shame not just for his actions, but for the naive trust he placed in the party’s leadership.
